A Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) is a qualified teacher within a school who is responsible for overseeing provision for students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). They play a key role in identifying and addressing the specific learning needs of students, ensuring they receive appropriate support and are able to reach their full potential.
What does a SENCO do?
SENCos work with teachers, parents, and other professionals to identify and assess the needs of students with SEN. They help develop and implement individualized support plans, including Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), which outline the specific needs and goals of the child.
SENCos coordinate the various aspects of support for students with SEN, including classroom adjustments, specialized teaching, and access to external services. They act as a key point of contact for parents, teachers, other professionals, and the local authority, ensuring effective communication and collaboration.
