How to help children think and talk about their Emotions using colour.

In this video, headteacher Alis Rocca talks about helping children understand and manage their emotions to support good mental health. She explains that mental health doesn’t mean feeling happy all the time, but rather finding balance and avoiding overwhelming feelings like anxiety or anger. Rocca suggests using a colour-coding system to identify moods - for example, red for anger or frustration, and blue for sadness or low energy.

By creating a shared “emotion code” with parents, children can more easily express how they feel without needing complex words. She encourages pausing to notice emotions and then deciding what might help - such as asking for a cuddle, listening to a story, or taking time alone.

Rocca emphasizes that awareness and communication are key tools for children to manage their emotional wellbeing.
