Helping children express their emotions through colour

Hi, my name's Alis Rocca and I do lots of work with children.

I work in a school as a headteacher and I work as a yoga teacher and I do lots of yoga with children as well,

all around good mental health and how to make sure that your mental health is as best as it could be.

That means not necessarily that you feel really happy all the time,

but also it means that you don't feel grumpy or anxious at any high level.

A really good way of trying to get on top of your emotions

is maybe colour coding them.

Thinking to yourself "if I have a mood that makes me feel angry or cross and like hitting out", that's Red for example.

Or "if I have a mood that's making me feel sad and upset" that's Blue,

and you could work out a code with your parents and that way you can say to them, "At the moment I'm feeling Red."

and they will know "Ooh I know what Red means, that means that she's feeling a bit angry"

or "I'm feeling 'Blue". "Ah okay so she might be feeling like she's got no energy or she's upset."

And then just think to yourself, "Okay I know I'm feeling these colours,

what can I do to help myself?

I'm going to ask Mum for a cuddle,

or I'm going to ask Dad for a story.

Or actually, at the moment I just need some time alone.

So really stopping, pressing the pause button

and noticing how you feel is so important.
